According to a new study recently released by the Kessler Foundation, minorities who suffer from traumatic brain injuries have lower treatment success rates. Traumatic brain injuries can result from catastrophic sports mishaps, motor vehicle accidents, construction accidents and other incidents of negligence including slip and fall accidents. Most traumatic brain injuries require long term treatment. Many traumatic brain injury victims suffer from long term disability and never fully recover total cognitive functioning.
The Kessler Foundation study, published in the medical journal Neurorehabilitation, followed long term treatment of traumatic brain injuries in minorities and Caucasians to determine effectiveness rates. This most recent study, along with data from a 2011 study, suggested that minority patients did not have the same long term treatment success rates as Caucasian patients. Researchers speculate that unrealistic rehabilitative plans may account for this difference in success rates. Better education of minority patients with respect to achievable rehabilitation goals and the correction of common misconceptions are needed to close this treatment success rate gap.
The rate of traumatic brain injury in the minority population continues to grow. Unfortunately many current treatment models do not take into account the race, ethnicity, national origin, language or religion of the patient. As the Kessler Foundation study indicates until the treatment model changes to account for these factors, many minority patients will continue to have unrealistic recovery treatment goals and poorer treatment outcomes.
